By: Manitoba Moose Staff | Published: December 31st 2022

The Manitoba Moose close out the calendar year today against the Abbotsford Canucks. The two teams clash after the Canucks claimed a 4-2 win in last night's game. The Moose are undefeated in back-to-back situations this season and will try to keep that trend going this afternoon. Tickets for the New Year's Eve game are available at MooseHockey.com/TICKETS. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.

Ringing in the New Year

The Moose playing on New Year’s Eve has been a Winnipeg tradition since the team arrived from Minnesota in 1996. Even when the franchise relocated to St. John’s, the club played New Year’s Eve contests, though mostly on the road. Including their IHL and St. John’s days, the Moose hold a 14-8-0-0 record on Dec. 31. When playing their traditional game in Winnipeg, the Moose hold a 13-4-0-0 record, and have won nine straight New Year’s Eve games on home ice. The only year the Moose didn’t play on New Year’s Eve was 2016 when the club played Dec. 30 and Jan. 1.

Grab that Puck!

Tyler Boland notched a pair of goals in Manitoba’s loss against Abbotsford on Friday. Boland, who signed a two-year contract with Manitoba in 2022, made his AHL debut during the 2021-22 season with Manitoba and registered one assist in 13 games. The current campaign has seen the forward tally four points (2G, 2A) through 10 contests. The St. John’s, Nfld. product ranks second on the Moose during the month of December with a plus-four rating. Boland’s two-goal game also represents his first multi-point contest of his AHL career.

Year in Review

Over the course of the 2022 calendar year, the Manitoba Moose have a combined record of 42-23-6-3 entering the final contest of the 2022 portion of the season. On home ice, the Moose hold a 23-11-1-3 mark in 2022. Meanwhile, the team posted a 19-12-5-0 record on the road. Over the calendar year, the Moose are led in the points department by Jeff Malott. Since the calendar flipped to 2022, Malott recorded 49 points (32G, 17A). Malott’s 32 goals tie him for 18th in the AHL for the campaign. Declan Chisholm paces the team’s defencemen with 39 points (7G, 32A) in 54 games during 2022.

Leaning on Leon

Leon Gawanke racked his eighth assist in Friday’s night loss against Abbotsford. Gawanke has points in back-to-back games (1G, 1A). The defenceman currently has 15 points (7G, 8A) which places him second on the Moose in scoring from the blue line. Gawanke’s seven goals are three off his career high of the 10 goals he scored in 2021-22. The defender hasn’t gone longer than three games over the current campaign without tallying a point. Gawanke, a fifth round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 2017, has tallied four goals on the man-advantage. That matches his career-high that he set last season over the course of 65 contests.

Who's Trending?

Declan Chisholm recorded an assist in Manitoba’s loss against Abbotsford. The defenceman, who was drafted in the fifth round by Winnipeg in 2018, has tallied six helpers over the course of his last three games. Chisholm sits second on the Moose in scoring with 22 points (3G, 19A) in 26 games and is sixth among all AHL blueliners in points.
