Roster Moves
The Moose roster has been in a constant state of flux. Forward Tristin Langan was released from his professional tryout on Feb. 1. The NHL’s Taxi Squad ended on Feb. 2 and brought with it a wave of players back to the Moose. Winnipeg reassigned forwards Mikey Eyssimont and Kristian Reichel along with defencemen Johnathan Kovacevic, Declan Chisholm, Leon Gawanke and Ville Heinola. Goaltender Mikhail Berdin also made his return to the club. An additional pair of moves were made which saw goaltender Philippe Desrosiers head to Trois-Rivieres and Isaac Johnson was recalled from the Newfoundland Growlers.
Leading the Charge
Jeff Malott returned to the lineup this past weekend after missing three games. The forward seemingly didn’t miss a beat and netted four points (3G, 1A) in two games and now has 20 points (12G, 8A) through 34 games this season. That mark puts Malott second overall in team scoring and one back of current leader Austin Poganski’s 21 points. Malott has now equaled his previous career-high of 20 points and sits two goals shy of tying the 14 goals he scored in 2020-21. Malott finished the month of January by leading the Moose with five goals and was third on the team with seven points.
Seizing the Opportunity
With the Moose roster looking different every day, multiple players have been given different opportunities. Greg Meireles was bumped to be the squad’s first line centre and responded by recording four points (1G 3A) in two games this past weekend. Meireles’ two assists in Sunday’s victory also gave him his fourth career multi-point AHL game. The forward, who is in the midst of his first full AHL season, is now up to 19 points (3G, 16A) in 35 contests. With his 16 assists, Meireles now leads the club in that category. The former Kitchener Ranger finished the month of January by leading the club in assists (8) and points (9). The Ottawa, Ont. product leads Moose rookies with 19 points (3G, 16A) and sits 26th overall in AHL rookie scoring.
First Points
The Moose win against Abbotsford on Sunday was a special one for Dean Stewart. The defenceman, who was recalled from the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder on Jan. 8, recorded his first career AHL assist on the first period goal by Haralds Egle. The Manitoba native netted another point later in the contest on the power play. It was the first AHL multi-point game of Stewart’s career as he finished the night with two points, three shots and a plus-two rating in the Moose 5-3 victory.
Who's Trending?
Haralds Egle recorded two points (1G, 1A) against the Canucks in Sunday’s 5-3 win. This past weekend, Egle recorded three points (2G, 1A) in two games. The forward is now up to 11 points (4G, 7A) in 20 games. He finished second on the team in the month of January with eight points and led the squad with a rating of plus-nine.
