The First 36
Through the first 36 games of the 2021-22 season, the Moose have a record of 22-11-2-1 which is good for 47 points and second place in the AHL’s Central Division. Taking a look back through Moose history, that current mark finds the current team tied with the 2005-06 squad (22-11-1-2) for the fourth-best record in franchise history through 36 games. Another two-way tie exists for the second-best Moose record after 36 games, belonging to both the 2004-05 squad (23-10-1-2) and the 2011-12 edition (22-9-4-1) who each and 49 points at the time. The undisputed kings were the 2017-18 iteration of the Moose who boasted a record of 25-6-3-2 and 55 total points in 36 games.
Double-Digits
Jeff Malott returned to the lineup yesterday after missing three games. Despite the loss, the forward netted two points (1G, 1A) and now has 18 points (10G, 8A) through 33 games this season. That mark puts Malott third overall in team scoring and three back of current leader Austin Poganski who has 21 points. Malott’s goal in the loss was his 10th of the season, which leads the Moose. It’s his second time hitting double-digits, as the forward notched 14 goals in 2020-21.
Same Logo, Different Names
Like many teams in the AHL this season, the Moose lineup has been in a steady state of flux. A comparison between last night’s group and the team that skated in the Moose home opener shows just how much the lineup has changed. All told, the lineup in Game 36 had 12 different players participating from Game 4 on Oct. 22. The Moose featured 15 players on NHL contracts and 10 Winnipeg Jets draft picks on Oct. 22. Yesterday’s lineup held four NHL contracts and three Jets draftees. Despite the recent lineup changes, Manitoba holds a 7-2-1-1 record through the first 11 games of 2022. During that span, the Moose have a combined 15 points, including seven goals, from players who hadn’t appeared in 10 or more games with the team prior 2022 beginning.
This Quartet Ain’t Singing
The Moose crease was guarded by committee over the past seven games. Manitoba deployed four different netminders during that span. Evan Cormier was the lone goaltender to make more than one appearance, playing in three games. Mikhail Berdin, Philippe Desrosiers and Arvid Holm each picked up a game as well. The quartet posted a 4-2-1 mark over the seven games and combined for a 2.24 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage. All for goalies to play for the Moose this season have a goals-against average of 2.51 or lower and all four hold at least a .900 save percentage.
Who's Trending?
Forward Greg Meireles recorded two points (1G, 1A) against the Canucks in yesterday afternoon’s loss. It was the third multi-point AHL game for the forward. Meireles is now up to 17 points (3G, 14A) in 34 games through his AHL rookie season. His 17 points now vault the young forward into fourth place in Moose overall scoring.
