Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (12-12-2-2) played their final game ahead of the holiday break, going up against the Iowa Wild (13-14-2-1). The visitors didn’t wait long to get themselves in front. Chase De Leo won a faceoff back to Scott Glennie who fired the puck towards the net. De Leo pounced on the rebound for his sixth of the year, 6:14 into the game. It took until the 18:42 mark for Iowa to pull even. Mario Lucia drove to the crease and his shot skipped off Eric Comrie’s pad, straight to Teemu Pulkkinen who popped in his third goal against the Moose this season. Comrie was busy in the first, turning away 11 of the 12 shots he faced in the period as the teams went to the intermission tied 1-1.
Similar to yesterday’s matchup, both teams enjoyed some powerplay time in the middle frame, but were unsuccessful in converting the opportunities. Both defences were stingy in the second with the goaltenders facing a combined 12 shots. Comrie turned away five of those while Michalek faced seven. Kyle Connor had the best Moose scoring chance as he dangled his way into the offensive zone and tucked the puck in behind the goaltender, only to see the puck slide right along net and past the far post. The game took a physical turn when Brendan Lemieux and Nick Seeler dropped the gloves and the rookies engaged in an extended tilt.
The third period remained closely matched. The Moose had an early opportunity with powerplay time carrying over from the second and becoming a brief five-on-three. The Wild held the line despite a close calls including Connor hitting the post. Manitoba locked down Iowa for the second straight period, holding the Wild to five shots. With overtime looming, Jimmy Lodge broke into the Iowa zone and set up Connor in the middle of the ice. The rookie walked into the slot and fired home a wicked wrister with just 1:13 left on the clock as Manitoba grabbed the 2-1 win.
